We have a long and proven record of winning jail and prison misconduct cases.

Zackary Moffitt

Andy McNulty and co-counsel obtained a $3,500,0000 settlement for the family of Zackary Moffit, who died of withdrawal in the Summit County Jail. Zackary was displaying obvious signs of medical distress, but his jailers decided not to bother getting him help because the doctor was on vacation. Andy was part of a team that won in the court of appeals, and settled the case on the eve of trial.

Amanda Hall

Mari Newman and her team obtained a nearly $1,750,000 result on behalf of Amanda Hall. Amanda had been repeatedly sexually assaulted by a Colorado Department of Corrections prison guard. Mari took the case to trial and won a $1,500,000 verdict against the prison guard. This was in addition to a $250,000 settlement Mari obtained from the Department of Corrections. Along with critical changes make prison guards more accountable, the settlement required the Department of Corrections to install cameras in areas that had previously been without the necessary surveillance to prevent abuse of inmates by prison staff.

Diana Sanchez

Mari Newman and Andy McNulty obtained a settlement of $480,000 for a woman who was forced to give birth in the Denver County Jail on Smith Road. Diana complained for hours that she was in active labor, but was ignored by Denver jail guards. She gave brith to her son on a cold concrete bench. Mari and Andy fought to hold Denver accountable.

After the resolution of the case, Mari worked with community advocates and the Colorado legislature to enact laws protecting pregnant and post partum people from incarceration.

  • Lauren Gotthelf

Mari Newman and her team obtained a settlement of $400,000 after sheriff’s office deputies in the Boulder County Jail tasered Ms. Gotthelf while she was strapped into a restraint chair. In addition, Boulder was required to change its policy to prohibit the use of tasers on people who were restrained, and to provide significant mental health staffing and services for inmates.

  • Pippa McCully

Mari Newman and co-counsel obtained a total settlement of $800,000 against El Paso County and its medical provider, Correct Care Solutions (now Wellpath), on behalf of a young woman who suffered a significant knee injury at the hands of jail personnel.
